No Cost Measures

Thermostats

Turn the thermostat down by 1 degree C, it could save you 10% on your heating bills.

Curtains

Close your curtains at dusk and tuck behind the radiators to stop heat escaping through windows. This could save up to £15 per year on energy costs.

Lights

Always turn off lights when you leave the room, adjust blinds and curtains to let in as much sunlight as possible.

TV's, videos and stereos

Cut down on wasted energy by not leaving appliances on standby.

Fridges

Don't leave the fridge door open and avoid putting warm food in the fridge, as this increases the energy load on the appliance.

Washing machines

Always wash a full load or use a half load or economy programme if your machine has one.

Pots and pans

Choose the right size pan for the food and cooker, keep the lids on to avoid heat escaping. The flame only needs to heat the base of the pan, if they are around the sides they are wasted. Don't over fill pans with water when cooking foods.

Kettles

Only boil the amount of water required but make sure the water covers the heating element.

Taps

Turn taps off properly, a dripping tap wastes energy and enough water per day to fill a bath.

Shower

Instead of having a bath this saves about 40% in water. If you don't have a shower there are special attachments you can get that fit to bath taps to save energy.
