Preparing for Emergencies

Basic advice on what to do in an emergency

Major emergencies are rare and most people will go through life without ever having been directly involved.  However, many of you will have been faced with what could be termed as minor incidents such as short term disruptions to utility supplies – water, electricity, gas or telephones.  Whatever the cause of an emergency which could disrupt your normal activities, it’s worthwhile taking a few minutes to consider what actions you and your family could take to reduce the potential effects.

The Government has produced a booklet which gives basic advice on what to do and expect during an emergency situation and copies, which are available in 18 languages, can be downloaded from the Preparing for Emergencies website (see 'Related Links').

You can also order up to 5 copies by phoning 0800 887777 (textphone 08000 859859) or by writing to:

Preparing for Emergencies,
Freepost CN2223
Croydon
CR9 4WZ.

If writing, ensure that you indicate in which language you would like the booklet.  It is also available in large print, Braille and on audio tape.

Wakefield Council in conjunction with Wakefield District NHS have produced guidance outlining some of the actions which could be taken in the event of an emergency. (see 'Downloads')

Copies are also available at local libraries, parish halls, community centres and Wakefield District Housing offices
