Emergencies in the Home

There is a lot you can do to prepare yourself and your family in the event of an emergency in your home. Most emergencies in the home can be avoided or their impact reduced by simple precautions.

  • Ensure that you have an adequate number of working smoke detectors.
Advice can be obtained from the West Yorkshire Fire Service.

  • Ensure that gas appliances are regularly checked by a competent person.
Visit the Gas Safe Register website for more information.

  • Ensure that you have the necessary emergency numbers readily available for gas, water and electricity supply problems:
    • Electricity..... 0800 375675
    • Gas............. 0800 111999
    • Water.......... 0845 1242424 - Yorkshire Water

  • All family members should know how to turn off the services to your home – gas, water and electricity.

  • Carry out a basic survey of your home to identify and remove any potential hazards.

The insurance for your home and its contents should be adequate to cover all replacement costs. More advice can be obtained from the Association of British Insurers.
