1,3-Butadiene

1,3-Butadiene is a chemical consisting of four carbon and six hydrogen atoms. At normal temperatures it is a gas.

Sources

1,3-butadiene in the atmosphere derives solely from human activity. It is an important industrial chemical, used particularly in the manufacturing of synthetic rubber for tyres. It is also associated with the combustion of petrol and diesel fuel.  

Health Effects

Main exposure comes from breathing contaminated air. Effects on the nervous system and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat have been seen. It is also believed that 1,3-butadiene is a human carcinogen.
