Smoke from Industrial/Commercial Premises

Our Environmental Health Officers can investigate and deal with smoke emissions from commercial premises and typically investigate the following types of complaint.

Dark or black smoke from bonfires

It is an offence for dark smoke to be emitted from a commercial site.  If you witness an industrial, trade or commercial organisation emitting dark or black smoke contact us and ask for the Environmental Health Duty Officer to attend to witness the problem.

Smoke from bonfires which causes a statutory nuisance

Smoke from bonfires should not cause a statutory nuisance to any neighbours.
Businesses are under a Duty of Care to dispose of their waste properly and the Environment Agency can be contacted on 0800 807060 to report businesses burning their waste rather than disposing of it properly.

Smoke from a chimney

Under the Clean Air Act it is an offence to emit smoke from the chimney of any building.  There are some exemptions for example when lighting up a furnace from cold or for a process regulated under the Environmental Permitted Regulations.
