Anti-Social Behaviour - what it is and who to report it to

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) includes a range of problems: noisy neighbours, abandoned cars, vandalism, graffiti, litter and intimidating groups. It creates an environment where crime can take hold and affect people's everyday lives.

But there are ways to tackle the problem. The police, local authorities and housing associations have recently been given new powers to try and tackle this problem and make neighbourhoods safer.

Council responsibility

From 1 April 2011 Neighbourhood Patrollers became Environment Officers. This means they will only be dealing with environmental issues across the District, such as:

  • Littering
  • Dog Fouling
  • Fly-Tipping
  • Waste on land
  • Fly-Posting
  • Abandoned Vehicles

Issues of an environmental nature can be reported to Wakefield Council Contact centre:

Police responsibility

For incidents including:

  • Abusive behaviour
  • Youths drinking in parks and open spaces
  • Gangs and rowdy behaviour
  • Lighting of fires
  • Misuse of fireworks

It has been agreed between Wakefield Council and West Yorkshire Police that these matters will be dealt with by the Police and Police Community Support Officers, and you can refer these to West Yorkshire Police on 101, but if you feel in threat or immediate danger please ring 999.

If you are a WDH tenant, you can also let them know your concerns by ringing 0845 8 507 507 or email onecall@wdh.co.uk

Not sure who to contact?

If you are at all unsure which number to ring, please phone Wakefield Council Contact Centre on 0845 8 506 506 where staff will be able to advise you on who to contact.

Remember that if you are in immediate danger or fear for your safety then you should call the Police on 999
