Report an abandoned vehicle using the Neighbourhood Action Form

If you see a vehicle on the public road (car parks, driveways or housing association parking spaces don’t apply) with an out of date tax disc, you can report it online, by telephone or by post. You don’t have to give your name. Your report will be investigated and enforcement action taken, if needed.

Wakefield Council have adopted powers from DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Authority) to remove, impound and dispose of untaxed vehicles across the district. Authorised officers operate under The Vehicle Excise Duty (Immobilisation, Removal and Disposal of Vehicles) Regulations 1997. This legislation allows for the instant removal of untaxed vehicles located on the public highway.

What you neeed to report

  • registration mark
  • make, model and colour

Provide details about the location of the vehicle:

  • eg outside 24 Anystreet, Anytown, Any Postcode)
  • any feature landmark eg opposite telephone box

An enforcement field officer, who will make a formal sighting of the vehicle and complete a witness statement, will investigate the information you provide and take the appropriate action if needed.

How to reclaim your vehicle
Motorists wishing to reclaim their untaxed vehicles will have to pay an £80 release fee within the first 24 hours. If not reclaimed within 24 hours, the release fee rises to £160 plus £15 for each day the vehicle is stored. Motorists are also required to produce a valid tax disc or pay £120 surety payment, which will be refunded if a valid tax disc is produced within 14 days of claiming the vehicle. Any vehicle left unclaimed after 14 days will be disposed of by crushing or sold at auction.
