Keeping Ahead - Moving Education into the 21st Century
"The LEA provides very good support for curriculum use of ICT. Overall strategic planning...provides a comprehensive framework for the development of ICT in schools and as part of wider...development such as lifelong learning" - OFSTED Reports February 2001
Over the last 10 years, Wakefield District's school system has been modernised. Children in all parts of the District now transfer to high school at age 11, and over £100 million-worth of capital investment has meant that Wakefield has school buildings and facilities that stand comparison with those in any other authority.
Inspection reports continue to confirm the quality of provision made in our schools. The proportion of schools judged "good" or "very good" by inspectors is above national averages. All High Schools in the mainstream sector have Specialist status.
Schools have also shown their commitment to quality by working towards "Investor in People" status, the Chartermark, and the Basic Skills Agency Quality Mark.
Standards both at Key Stage 2+3 and at GCSE have been rising faster than nationally. GCSE results at the 5 x A*-C measure have improved by 10 percentage points over the last two years.
Schools use ICT to enrich the curriculum: whiteboard technology is spreading rapidly. The extended schools agenda is being taken up with enthusiasm, and a number of primary schools are about to become Children's Centres.
