Sustainable Travel Initiatives

What is a 'walking bus' ?

Walking BusA 'walking bus' comprises a minimum of two volunteer parents who escort a group of children on their journey to and from school. It promotes exercise by encouraging walking and helps to reduce traffic congestion near to school. The volunteers walk along a set route collecting pupils at 'bus stops' on the way.

How do I set up a 'walking bus' ?

Following a request from either a parent of a school, the Travel Awareness Unit will ascertain safe walking routes, pick up point's etc. and ensure the suitability of adult volunteers.

Routes are risk assessed by Travel Awareness Officers and volunteers are trained in safe pedestrian behaviour. The initiative can be linked to other projects such as 'Safer Routes to School' and 'Pedestrian Skills Training'.

If you are interested in setting up a Walking Bus in your area please see the 'Contact Us - Travel Awareness Team' link for details of how to get in touch with us.
