Walk with Fawkes

Children and parents are being invited to walk with Fawkes to celebrate Bonfire Night with Wakefield Council.

Guy Fawkes will be walking with children to their schools from November 2 as part of the Council’s school travel planning team’s work to promote healthy and safe journeys.

The team also works to draw up travel plans for schools across the district, which helps reduce congestion and improves road safety.

After making the journey to each school with the pupils, Guy will be recounting tales of the gun powder plot – from his point of view of course.

Councillor Pat Garbutt, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “These events are going to be incredibly exciting for the children – it’s not every day they get to walk to school with the famous Guy Fawkes.

“This is part of the Council’s wider work with children and parents so they understand the importance of walking safely to school, which in turn promotes health activity, reduces congestion and improves road safety.

“The response we get from these events is excellent and it’s a great way of forming links between our schools and families too – and having some fun in the process.”

The event is supported by Wakefield Council’s historic Clarke Hall.  Children at many of the schools will also be dressing in period costumes or fireworks for the walks.
