Pavement Paws - In partnership with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

A paw-fect partnership has seen Wakefield Council team up with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People to promote healthier and safer travel.

The Council’s school travel plan team and the charity are going on a tour of local schools to promote the work the charity does as well as walking safely to school.

Pat Garbutt, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is an important charity which help so many people so this is a great way of promoting them as well as walking safely to school as part of our school travel planning work.

“I think this is an excellent partnership and together we can educate young people and make walking fun, while promoting healthier lifestyles too.”

Speakers from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and the Council will be presenting assemblies at four schools from October 12, followed by some special park ‘n’ stride walks to school with the children and dogs from October 19.

Hearing Dogs’ Volunteer Co-ordinator, Lucy Dacre said: “We’re really looking forward to working with Wakefield Council to encourage children to walk to school and also learn about Hearing Dogs for Deaf People at the same time.  At present, we really need more volunteers to become full-time puppy socialisers in the Wakefield area and young families are ideal.

“Our volunteers are invaluable to us – with the support of more puppy socialisers in Wakefield we can train more puppies who will change the lives of their deaf recipients.”
