Morning at the Museum

History will be brought to life as this month as Wakefield Council teams up with the Leeds Royal Armouries.

Knights, cowboys, Victorians and pirates are getting on board the Council’s ‘Morning at the Museum’ events to launch new park and stride schemes across the district.

The schemes work with schools to reduce congestion and promote walking to school, encouraging more young people to lead healthier, active lifestyles.

These walks will transport children back in time as each one is led by a different historical character.

Cllr Pat Garbutt, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “This scheme is excellent because not only does it promote healthy activity for young people, but it also means less cars on the roads, especially around schools.

“By making the events innovative, fun and exciting by involving such interesting characters, it captures the children’s imagination.  The messages about health and safety really hit home – and the children have a fantastic start to their day.”

The scheme is being run by the Council’s school travel plan team who can help set-up school buses, walking buses with cycle trains as well as looking into the highways and transport network for the school.
