Academy Briefing Presentation - 4 April 2011

Following the attached presentation being made, the Government announced on the 13 April 2011, the following:

To provide a capital fund for open Academies to access in the 2011-12 financial year. Partnerships for Schools will allocate the funding through a bidding process and administer the fund, with support from the YPLA. The bidding process is currently being finalised and further information, including bidding criteria and contact details in Partnerships for Schools, will be made available shortly. The purpose of this message is to alert you to this, allow you to consider and prioritise your requirements and gather information necessary (including any relevant asset management plan or condition survey data) in preparation for a short application process.

The main purpose of the fund is to support Academies with significant and urgent buildings maintenance and/or health and safety needs that cannot be met from routine maintenance or devolved capital funding, particularly where there has not been any recent new building or refurbishment works, or where no such future works have been agreed. Requirements for other urgent capital works may also be considered.

Given the sharp reduction in capital funds available to the Department for Education, it is envisaged that only high priority projects will receive funding. We also expect that Academies which have received a commitment of funding from their local authority for their building project to secure funds from that source in the first instance.
