Extended Services

Extended Services are a range of services and activities offered by or through schools which aim to improve the outcomes of children, young people and families, as well as the wider community.

In 2005 the Government defined a range of core services which are expected to be available through all schools by September 2010.  This range of services is called the ‘core offer’.

The core offer includes:

Access to high quality wraparound childcare – this can be provided on the school site or through other local providers, and should be available 8am-6pm all year round (or as needed to meet local demand)
Access to a varied menu of activities to be on offer, including homework clubs and study support, sport, music tuition, dance and drama, arts and crafts, special interest clubs such as chess and volunteering, business and enterprise activities
Access to parenting support including information sessions for parents at key transition points, parenting programmes, parent information point and family learning sessions
Swift and easy referral to a wide range of targeted and specialist support services such as speech therapy, child and adolescent mental health services, family support services, intensive behaviour support, and (for young people) sexual health services
Access to school facilities (where appropriate) such as ICT, sports and arts facilities and access to adult learning

Most schools in Wakefield offer access to the full core offer.
