Education at Home - A Guide for Parents

The following information and guidance is for those parents who are considering educating their children at home. See the frequently asked questions (FAQs) for more information.

There are a number of sources of advice and practical assistance available to parents who elect to home educate (see 'Related Links').

  • The Department for Education and Skills website provides:-
    • an information sheet for parents on elective home education
    • access to the National Curriculum and associated schemes of work.

  • Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)- develop and administer National Curriculum tests and assessment arrangements and such information may be found on the QCA’s website, or by telephoning their publications office on 01787 884 444.

  • Connexions Service is for children and young people aged 13-19 year living in England. Its services and responsibilities cover children and young people who are being educated at home.

  • There are also a number of independent home education support sites

Please Note:-

When parents elect to home educate their children they assume financial responsibility for their children’s education.

Children educated at home have no entitlement to participate in work experience under arrangements made by an LA, however, where home educated children do participate in work experience schemes consideration should be given, by parents, to the extent to which such children are covered by, for example, insurance provision. Also the relevant Employers are responsible for carrying out risk assessments in respect of young people on work experience placements as if they were members of their staff.

Education Maintenance Allowance is a means tested grant available to learners over the age of 16, if they stay on in education at school or college, it is not available to learners whose parents continue to educate them at home.
