How do I apply for a school place?

If you live in the Wakefield district you must apply to Wakefield Council for your child’s school place, even if one or more of your preferred schools is in a neighbouring council.

You can apply:

  • Online – click on ‘Wakefield’s online admissions and applications’ in ‘Related Links’.
  • Using the ‘Common Application Form’ – sent to you by Wakefield Council’s School Admission Team. Return the form to them once you have completed it.

List your 3 chosen schools in order of preference, with the ‘First Preference School’ being your favourite. Naming the same school more than once does not increase your chances of getting a place at that school.

If you are applying for a place at a Voluntary Aided school owned by the Catholic Church or Church of England, you may have to complete a ‘Supplementary Information Form’ as well. Contact the school to ask for this form and then return it to them once you have completed it.

Once you have submitted your application, you must make sure you get confirmation that it has been received. If your application was made online you will get an email confirmation; if you used the paper form, you will receive a letter. If you do not get confirmation within 4 weeks, you need to contact the School Admission Team.

All applications must be received by the deadline – see the ‘Guide for Parents’ in the ‘Related Downloads’ section. If your application is received after the deadline it will be considered as late. This means that it will not be processed until all on-time applications have been dealt with.

If you are applying for a place because you want to move your child to another school, you must use the ‘Common Application Form’. Contact the Wakefield Council School Admission Team to get a copy – click on their link in the ‘Related Links’ section.
