Q
Is it my responsibility to make sure my child goes to school?
A
Yes, Education Welfare Officers monitor school attendance and help parents meet their responsibilities. Parents have a legal duty to ensure that their children are educated. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to ensure regular attendance at school or otherwise (Education Act 1996). Regular attendance at school will be essential to your child’s potential achievements and their future life choices.
Q
Can I take my child on holiday during school time?
A
You are NOT entitled to take your child on holiday during school term time. Family holidays should be taken during school holidays. However, in exceptional circumstances you may request leave from the Headteacher and/or Chair of Governors.
Q
Who is able to provide me with help and advice about child welfare?
A
Education Welfare Officers are available to offer parents and pupils advice and support on a range of issues; such as exclusions, bullying, attendance, truancy, drug abuse, bereavement and a wide range of other home and/or school difficulties.
Q
Can my child work and attend school?
A
Children of compulsory school age who wish to undertake part-time employment, must be registered with the LA in the area he/she works (Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and 1963); (Health and Safety (Young Persons) Regulations 1997). For further information and advice, contact the Education Welfare Service Child Employment Officer on 01924 307449.
