Help with downloading and viewing files

Downloads

On some pages you can download files relating to the page you are reading, these appear in the 'Downloads' panel.

To download a file:-

  • place your mouse cursor over the link to the file you want to download
  • click the right mouse button and choose the option to ‘Save Link As’ or ‘Save Target As’
  • a box will appear to let you save the file somewhere on your machine, when you’ve chosen somewhere (your desktop is usually a good place)
  • click the OK button

The file will begin downloading, this may take several minutes depending on how big the file is and whether you have broadband or not. When it’s finished you can go to your desktop and double click on the file to open it.

Depending on the software used to create the download file and the software you have available you may need to install a file viewer on your machine. The table below describes the common file types we use and what you need to view them:

File Type Opens With
Word Document (ends with ".doc") Microsoft Word or Microsoft Word Viewer
Portable Document File (ends with ".pdf") Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader (* more information below)
Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (ends with ".xls") Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Excel Viewer
Powerpoint Presentation (ends with ".ppt") Microsoft Powerpoint or Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer
Sound files (ends with ".wav" or ".mp3") Windows Media Player or other popular multimedia players.
Video Files (ends with ".mpg" or ".wmv") Windows Media Player or other popular multimedia players.

*PDF documents may not be readily accessible to screen readers and may not be formatted for visually impaired users. The following tools can be used to convert PDF documents into plain text or plain HTML documents. You can translate a PDF into a text only or plain HTML by using a script or sending a file as an attachment.
