Heritage

National Coal Mining museum of EnglandThe Wakefield district has a rich and varied heritage for you to explore – from our industrial heritage to our historic castles and architecture.

The district's history includes a War of the Roses Battle, the remains of two castles at Sandal and Pontefract, a National Trust House at Nostell Priory and the National Coal Mining Museum for England at the former Caphouse Colliery.

In more recent times, The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, with its four indoor galleries and fine examples of modern sculpture by Wakefield born Barbara Hepworth and Castleford’s Henry Moore, inspires and delights visitors with over 500 acres of landscaped parkland to enjoy.

In celebration of the districts connections to contemporary art, an exciting new gallery for the city, The Hepworth, Wakefield, will open early 2011.
