Cycling

Cycling is a good form of exercise, it's environmentally friendly, it's economical, and best of all it's fun too.

Wakefield Council, Wakefield Cycle Users Forum and other partners are involved in a number of projects and organise a series of events.

  • When cycling don't forget to wear a helmet.

Wakefield District cycle maps
Designed by the Wakefield district Cycle Forum with cyclists in mind, these maps cover the entire Wakefield district area and show a network of routes recommended by local cyclists, consisting of a number of signed cycle routes, many quiet roads, traffic-calmed areas and off-highway links.
Cycle rides
Choose from 14 routes – from 5 miles to 20 miles, there is something for everyone. These advisory cycle routes include routes in Wakefield city and the surrounding towns and villages, plus routes around rural areas and avoid heavily trafficked roads and junctions that are deemed dangerous.
Health rides
The Wakefield District Cycle Forum run a number of health rides throughout the district. These rides are aimed at all ages and abilities. They last approximately one hour, cycling a distance of between 5-7 miles on traffic free routes and quiet roads.

The Trans Pennine Trail runs through the Wakefield district, and in total includes 350 miles (560km) of signed route to follow along a mixture of well surfaced canal and railway paths, tracks and bridleways, footpaths, cycle lanes and minor roads. Much of the route provides relatively easy access for trail users with disabilities and long sections are completely traffic free and ideal for families with children.
