Wakefield District Sports Directory

We have developed a database of all sports clubs across Wakefield District. At the last count, there were approximately 360 clubs in the area, all of which were sent a questionnaire asking for details.

The primary purpose of this directory is to act as a permanent resource to all local people, community groups and schools to promote existing sports opportunities across Wakefield District.

By publicising existing opportunities made available by sports clubs, schools and community groups, it is hoped to increase participation in sport. To make people aware of what exists and where they can go.

The secondary purpose of this directory is to make sports clubs, more aware of other clubs, to encourage partnerships between clubs, to enable them to share resources and working practices to improve the quality of services provided.

Sport, in today's climate, is being viewed as 'more than just sport'. Sport, is now recognised as an activity, which can help people live more fulfilling lives. Taking part in sport can give individuals improved health prospects, make them feel better about themselves, bring communities together and regenerate areas through the provision and upgrading of facilities.

It is the final aim of this directory to publicise sports clubs to other public agencies to encourage the view that sport can be used to meet wider government targets such as health and education, enabling clubs to access non-traditional sources of funding and services.
