Walton Colliery Nature Park is a 73.6 hectare country park located 3 miles south east of Wakefield City Centre with lakes and ponds, woodland and grassland, as well as a section of the Barnsley Canal.
The entire site was designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 2008.
Following the colliery’s closure, the site was restored as a nature reserve.
This involved covering the ‘spoil heaps’ with subsoil obtained from the excavation of significant water features.
These works were completed as recently as the mid-1990’s.
