Barnsley Canal

Barnsley CanalThe towpath of the disused Barnsley Canal from Walton through to Old Royton follows a scenic wooded route and in places is cut through a rocky gorge.  It is quiet place for wildlife and pleasant walks.

This 200 year old Canal once brought coal to Wakefield from Barnsley and has the feel of an old person who has seen life and wishes to take things easy now.

The towpath along this section is a public right of way and is part of the Trans Pennine Trail walking and cycling route.
