Due to their versatility, paper and card became popular materials for toy making in the 18th century.
Paper dolls were the most successful, illustrating fashions of the day, famous people or characters from stories.
They continued to be popular throughout the 20th century with postcards being a favourite way to circulate them amongst children.
This postcard cut out is based on the nursery rhyme little miss muffet and was produced in the 1950s.
