This work was the 100th piece of sculpture to become part of the collection at Wakefield Art Gallery.
Roberts-Jones studied at Goldsmiths' College from 1932 to 1934 and the Royal Academy Schools from 1934 to 1938. He fought in Burma during the Second World War, returning to London in 1946 to teach art and pursue his career as a figurative sculptor. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1973.
As a portrait sculptor, Ivor Roberts-Jones's is one of the most significant to work in Britain during the second half of the 20th Century. One of his most famous works remains the over-life-size bronze statue of Sir Winston Churchill commissioned for Parliament Square, London in 1971.
