Write On

Imagine a world without written words.

How different would our daily lives be without written communication?

From ancient times people have used forms of writing to record everything from accounts to battles.

It is through these records that we can learn so much about the lives of our ancestors.

This exhibition features writing objects from a typewriter to quill pens and a fragment of a Roman wax writing tablet excavated in Castleford. There is also an Egyptian grave figure engraved with hieroglyphs that spell out its duties for the afterlife.

Activities

A group of students learning English as a second language visited Featherstone library to look at the exhibition and have a go at calligraphy with the help of the Pontefract Calligraphers.

Adults with learning disabilities tried writing with dip pens and wax tablets at Featherstone, and at Knottingley library children and adults made Valentines cards using fancy writing.

Dates: Havercroft library June – September 2005, Featherstone September – December 2005, Knottingley December 2005 – March 2006, Normanton March – June 2006.
