Visiting Sandal Castle

What is there?

The castle is best known for the battle of Wakefield, which was fought nearby in 1460 during the Wars of the Roses. Richard Duke of York was killed in the battle.

Excavation work in 1964-1973 uncovered the overgrown stonework, and as a result, Sandal Castle is now the finest excavated motte and bailey castle in Northern Europe.

Recent lottery funding helped to build walkways and platforms around the castle ruins as well as a fully accessible visitor centre.

This includes inter-active displays, discovered artefacts, shop, toilets, and an area where you can buy refreshments.
