Online Library Resources

Electronic library resources at your fingertips

Once you have joined the library you are able to access a wide range of free online resources to assist you in your work, your study or for pleasure.

A number of these resources can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection, 24 hours a day. Follow the links below and key in your borrower number (located on the back of your library membership card) to access them.

Some of the resources can only be accessed within the library branches or within Wakefield Reference & Information Library. Library staff will log you on to these resources - please ask at the Library counter for assistance.

Ancestry
Ancestry is an essential family history tool which provides access to a wide range of sources including Censuses 1841-1901 and continually updated England and Wales Civil Registration- Births, Marriages and Deaths. The website is available to library members in all libraries. A member of staff will log library members onto the site.
Britannica
Online access to all Encyclopaedia Britannica full-text articles including pictures. Also includes access to Britannica Junior (for 5 - 11 year olds) and to Britannica Student (for 12 - 18 year olds). If accessing from outside the library you will need to type in your borrower number to access the resource.
British Standards
Huge database of government specifications and industry standards with over 35,000 draft, active and historical standards. Enter your library borrower number in the 'Library card ID' box and click 'Log in' to access this resource. Available from any computer with Internet access.
COBRA Small Business Advisor
COBRA is a continually expanding business encyclopaedia covering all aspects of starting and running a business. From writing a business plan to expanding an existing business, COBRA contains around 4000 factsheets, market reports, contacts, and sources of funding and support to help entrepreneurs and their advisers. Available at Wakefield Learning and Local Studies Library. Please ask staff to log you on.
Dynamed medical information
DynaMed is a medical information database with nearly 3,000 clinical topic summaries. It is updated daily and offers good quality health information from scholarly sources intended for health practitioners. To access this resource, which is freely available to all Wakefield Libraries' members, visit the NHS Clinical Knowledge website and click the Dynamed link on the right of the webpage to access.
EBSCO Host Database
Ebsco Host databases include GreenFile, a database of information covering all aspects of human impact on the environment with some full text articles; Library, Information Science & Technology Abstract (LISTA) which indexes journal articles on these topics and Teacher reference center, which provides indexing and abstracts for more than 270 of the most popular educational journals. To access this resource, please insert your Wakefield Library Card ID number when prompted.
ICC Plum
UK companies accounts and reports. Only available in Wakefield Reference & Information Library - please ask a member of staff to log you on.
Issues Online
Current social/current affairs/environmental topics online with statistics. Aimed at young adults - ideal to help with homework and coursework. click on 'Issues Online', enter your library borrower number in the 'Public library Users Login' box and click 'login' to access this resource. Available from any computer with Internet access.
NewsBank Online Newspapers
Access to full text of UK national and regional newspaper articles. Available from any computer with access to the Internet - use your library borrower number to log-on.
Oxford Art Online
Excellent reference dictionary of art and artists, previously called Grove Art Dictionary. Includes thousands of pictures, definitions and much more. Enter your library borrower number in the 'Library barcode login' and click 'Enter' box to access this resource. Available from any computer with Internet access.
Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Access to thousands of biographies and images of renowned British personalities who died before 2000. To access this service please enter your library borrower number where it says 'Library Card Login'. Available from any computer with Internet access.
Oxford English Dictionary
If you want to access the OED from any computer with Internet access please follow this link, enter your library card number and click 'login'.

If you are in a library, follow this link to begin searching the ultimate authority on the English language without having to enter your Library Card details.
Oxford Music Online
Enjoy instant access to the world's premier authority on all aspects of music, 24 hours a day, from any computer with Internet access. Includes the former Grove Music Online database and the new Oxford Encyclopaedia of Popular Music. Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection
Begin exploring this extensive collection of reference works by entering your borrower number where it says 'Library Card Number' and clicking 'log-in'. Everything from Accounting to Zoology available 24 hours a day from any computer with Internet access!
People's Network - Discover
'Discover' is a new service from the People's Network - search online for a range of items from libraries, museums and archives. Available from any computer with Internet access - no password is needed.
People's Network - Enquire
'Enquire' is a 24/7 "live chat" service from the People's Network that instantly connects you to someone who is trained to help you find the answers to your questions. Access from any computer with Internet access - no password needed.
People's Network - Read
'Read' is a new service from the Peoples Network designed to help you to explore books and reading and to share that experience (good or bad!) with others. Available from any computer with Internet access - no password needed.
Which
''Contents only' search for consumer information. Allows you to easily pinpoint the information you need. Available in 16 of our Libraries across the district - please ask at the library counter for access information. Paper copies of the full 'Which' magazine (latest issue plus back copies for the year) are also available at these libraries. Wakefield Reference & Information Library has longer runs of back copies.
Whos Who and Who Was Who Online
Who's Who is the definitive directory of everyone who’s anyone in Britain, and beyond, today, plus over 100,000 entries from the archives of Who was Who dating back to 1898. To access this service please enter your library borrower number where it says 'Library Card Number'. Available from any computer with Internet access.
