The City of Wakefield Golf Course now operates from the recently constructed Gaskell Sports Pavilion. This purpose built building has facilities for golfers that include a pro shop, lockers and changing facilities. As well as golfers the Gaskell Sports Pavilion also provides much needed changing accommodation for the resident football and cricket clubs at the site.

The golf course has an eco friendly brown water underground irrigation system that comprises of two fibre glass water tanks that can store 150 cubic meters water, which is harvested via the guttering on the new building. Over the years this will save thousands of litres of water and in the process reduce the Council’s utility bills.
The Gaskell Sports Pavilion also contains a new bar and large social area that will open in the New Year to both members of the resident City of Wakefield Golf Club and to “Pay to Play” golfers for the day they purchase their ticket. Additionally Footballers and Cricketers of the teams operating from the adjacent sports pitches will be able to take advantage of the facilities on offer.
The new facility has been so named in order to maintain the link with the adjacent grade 2 star listed building of Lupset Hall. The present Lupset Hall building was completed in 1716. It was purchased for the Gaskell family in 1806 and remained in their ownership until 1927 when it was sold to the corporation of Wakefield for £6,370. In 1936 the park land surrounding Lupset Hall was converted into a municipal golf course and the hall itself became the club house.
The naming of the new pavilion is particularly to remember the first member of the Gaskell family to own Lupset Hall; Daniel Gaskell. Daniel Gaskell was the hall’s most notable proprietor. Born in 1782, Gaskell was a radical and a non conformist; and was a noted social reformer. Following the passing of the “Great Reform Bill” by parliament in 1832, Wakefield became entitled to send a member to represent the district in parliament. Daniel Gaskell was elected as Wakefield’s first MP in December 1832. He was re elected in January 1835 and served until July 1837. Daniel Gaskell devoted much of his life to improving conditions for less fortunate people including the youth of the district.
