15. Normanton Post Office

Normanton Post office thirty years ago was on the railway stations and was an important mail forwarding office and transfer office. Practically all of this work has been diverted elsewhere and in this branch of postal work it now only deals with the correspondence of its own delivery area. There is however a large amount of work done at the Normanton Post office as the following figures will amply show.

The average weekly number of letters delivered is 22,500, the average weekly number of parcels delivered is 516, the average weekly number of letters posted at Normanton is 15,198, the average number of parcels posted is 217.

Old aged pensioners over 70 years of age, paid at Normanton Post office number approximately 570, and there are also about 350 between 65 and 70 years of age, whilst Army and Navy allowances to the number of 522 are paid weekly.

The above figures give some indication of the health and longevity of the inhabitants of Normanton and as it is well known there are a number of residents over 65 who have not qualified for the contributory pension, and therefore are not receiving it, we may venture to conclude that there are, at the present time, living in Normanton approximately 1,000 people over 65 years of age, over 500 of whom are over 70.

I am glad to express my thanks to the postal authorities at Normanton and Leeds for their kindness in supplying me with the above information.
