Robin Hood

The story of Robin Hood is not a straightforward one. Indeed, there are many versions of the story of who he was, what he did and who were his companions. Small snippets of factual evidence have to compete against hundreds of years of myth making by medieval minstrels, later writers and dramatists, as well as modern day television series and movies.

Robin Hood is probably most commonly associated with Nottingham by many people and that area has made much of the connection. But, if this character did exist then he most likely roamed the vast forests of his day well into the areas of modern day Yorkshire. In fact many of the legends connect him with Yorkshire locations.

There is one strong candidate for being the original Robin Hood … he is called Robert Hode and he came from Wakefield.

Another part of the legend with a local connection is the story of the confrontation between Robin Hood and the Pinder of Wakefield, George-A-Green. The two fought each other and resulted in George-A-Green joining the band of outlaws.
