Although the original lease for deep coal extraction was granted earlier to the Co-operative Wholesale Society, the Upton Colliery Company was formed in 1923. By June 1927, the Barnsley seam had been reached. An unfavourable coal trade caused a temporary two year shut down in September the same year. Explosions and fires, leading to loss of life and serious geological faults, caused final closure of the colliery in 1964.
