Upton Colliery

Showing the conveyor belt system which moved coal from the headgear shaft to the screens and washers.   Although the original lease for deep coal extraction was granted earlier to the Co-operative Wholesale Society, the Upton Colliery Company was formed in 1923. By June 1927, the Barnsley seam had been reached.   An unfavourable coal trade caused a temporary two year shut down in September the same year.   Explosions and fires, leading to loss of life and serious geological faults, caused final closure of the colliery in 1964.
