West Yorkshire Archive Service

The West Yorkshire Archive Service exists to preserve the county's heritage of historical documents and to help members of the public make use of them. The Service is funded by the five Metropolitan District Councils in West Yorkshire, and forms part of West Yorkshire Joint Services. The Service has its headquarters in Wakefield.

Resources held include:-

  • local authority records
  • West Riding Registry of Deeds (1704 -1970)
  • records of public bodies, e.g coroners, magistrates, health authorities
  • ecclesiastical records
  • other records, e.g. local businesses, independent schools, charitable institutions, and a wide variety of organisations, families and individuals.

All visitors are welcome, but you must make an appointment before you come.

Location/Direction

A short walk from the city centre the Archives building is situated in the Civic Quarter behind Wakefield College.

The Registry of Deeds building is the headquarters of the West Yorkshire Archive Service. It houses records of the former West Riding and West Yorkshire county wide, as well as being the record office for Wakefield Council.
