Visit the Sites & Monuments Record (SMR)

Ask for details of:-

  • archaeological sites e.g. hillforts, Roman towns, castles, abbeys
  • aerial photographs to help look at the development of the landscape
  • historic building records to trace the development of churches, houses and other structures
  • early maps to see how place names may indicate settlement patterns

Visit your local museum 

  •  objects from early settlements

If you are interested in development in the 19th and 20th centuries  

Visit your local library

  • large scale maps to show the changing street layout
  • trade directories to discover businesses in a specific street
  • electoral registers to see who lived at a given address
  • census returns to get information on members of a household
  • old newspapers to look at people and events
  • aerial photographs

Visit the SMR

  • structural details of industrial and other buildings where they have been archaeologically recorded

Visit the archives for:

  • maps
  • electoral registers
  • old photographs

Visit your local museum for:

  • photographs
