Lister Square 1970s

This snowy scene from the 1970s was taken from Ackton Hall pit yard looking south across to Lister Square.

Ackton Hall colliery closed in 1985 soon after the end of the great miners' strike.

The name lister crops up in several places as it was the family name of Lord Masham, owner of the pit from 1891 into the 20th century.  Masham's son, John Cunliffe Lister donated a large sum of money towards the cost of the swimming pool opened in 1910 and consequently known as the Lister Baths.Lister Square 1970
