Granted by the Kings of Arms under Letters Patents on 3rd March 1952.
On the Arms the name of Castleford is indicated by the gold castle and the ford of white and blue waves upon the shield.
The situation of the town in the West Riding is shown by the white rose on red.
The fact that the town stands on the site of a roman station is represented by the Roman eagle, tinctured gold, which wears a red collar from which is suspended a miner's safety lamp in proper colours, alluding to the local coal-mining industry. On each wing of the eagle is the badge of the Laceys, Earls of Lincoln and Lords of the Honor in which Castleford used to lie.
The motto "Audacter et Sincere", which is also incorporated in the Arms, means "Boldly and Frankly".
A local Board of Health had been set up in 1851 and this was succeeded by the Urban District Council in 1894. Castleford was created a Borough by Royal Charter granted by Queen Elizabeth II on 29th March 1955.
