The governor of the time compiled this well illustrated history of the prison to mark its 400th anniversary.

All manner of fascinating detail on Wakefield prison (although there are references to other local prisons) based on notes by a former governor, Captain Godfrey Armytage.  

Reynolds, Rev. R. V.: The Outcasts of England or The Prison Question Considered Theoretically and Practically. (Stanfield 1850)
This is not a history but discusses the treatment of offenders. Rev. Reynolds was the Chaplain at Wakefield prison.
