The Summer of Culture is a programme of activities, festival and events for the whole family taking place in the Wakefield District during May to September 2010.

The programme includes events organised by Wakefield Council, Wakefield District Housing and arts organisations including DIVA, BEAM, Wakefield Theatre, Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir, Faceless and local community groups.

There will be a wide range of exhibitions, performances, workshops and outdoor activities taking place in town centres, parks, museums and other venues across the district and many of them are free of charge.

A few highlights of the Summer of Culture includes:

• An Ideal Husband – Friday 2nd July
• Pontefract Liquorice Festival - Sunday 11 July
• Medieval Games at Pontefract Castle - 24th July 
• The Secret Garden – Thursday 29th July
• Clarence Park Music Festival Saturday - 31 July and Sunday 1 August
• Love in Shakespeare - Friday 13th August
• Seaside in the City - Saturday 14 August
• Normanton Gala - Saturday 11 September
