Holding an event in Wakefield City centre

Markets and Major Events within Wakefield Council manages a number of event spaces in the city centre.  These spaces are available to hire for the purpose of company and commercial promotion, event promotion and information exchange. Please see ‘Downloads’ for a map of the city centre showing the spaces that are available for hire.

Applying for an event consent

Please complete the appropriate application form (see 'Downloads') and return it to the Markets and Major Events team either by post or in person to Room 27, Town Hall, Wakefield, WF1 2HQ.

Considering your application

Applications for consent must be made no later than eight weeks before the date of the event.

You must supply the following additional documents with your application:-

  • A risk assessment covering the entire event/activity
  • Relevant documentation indemnifying the Council to a minimum value of £5,000,000
  • Images of display materials and any leaflets you intend to use at your event

It is an offence to distribute free printed matter (leaflets, flyers etc.) within Wakefield city centre without consent. Offenders could face a fine of up to £2,500. If you are successful in obtaining an event consent you may hand out promotional leaflets within the confines of the allotted space. Please refer to the Conditions of Consent on the Guidance on Controlling the Free Distribution of Printed Matter (see ‘Downloads’).

If you wish to hold a street collection then approval must be sought from our Licensing Service, a separate form is supplied for this purpose. The Council will need to determine if you are fit and proper to conduct such an activity.

If you intend to distribute leaflets within Wakefield city centre you must obtain a consent.  It is an offence to distribute free printed matter (leaflets, flyers etc.) within Wakefield city centre without consent (see 'Related Links' for more information).

Duration of the consent 

The consent will be valid only for the dates given.

Fee

There may be a fee for the hire of the space for your event.  Please refer to the guidance notes for details.
