Wakefield's Cultural Strategy is shaping the way we live, work and play in the district. Culture plays a big part in changing lives for the better.
We have much to celebrate in Wakefield with some top class cultural venues and organisations. Plus there are new developments all the time - 2011 saw the opening of The Hepworth Wakefield which attracted over 150,000 visitors in its opening months; the opening of the restored historic lakes and woodland at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, major improvements to the fabric of the famous Pontefract Castle, and the introduction of the Creative Partners Grant Scheme to support local cultural organisations.
We are building a national and international reputation with major national attractions like the National Coalmining Museum, Wakefield Cathedral, Nostell Priory and Xscape Leisure complex. We have strong, welcoming communities with a rich and diverse heritage.
There’s plenty of exciting developments taking place that will only strengthen the district’s profile as an important cultural destination in Yorkshire.
The Cultural Strategy for Wakefield district maps out what we want to achieve over the period 2007-2012 through working in partnership with local people and with the creative and cultural industries to deliver our shared vision.
