This bid is a joint effort between people in the public, private and voluntary and community sectors. It spans many fields including culture, education and play. Some of the work we are doing with young people in the district is shown below. We all want to do more, creating more diverse and innovative cultural activities which open doors to high quality arts and culture.

The Hepworth, Wakefield

245 pupils from 5 local schools are working with well known artists on the Building Bridges project at Wakefield Art Gallery to produce unique and inspiring art
Work by Barbara Hepworth and architect David Chipperfield for The Hepworth Wakefield is used to do this. The Hepworth is Yorkshire's world-class £26m art gallery and creative centre opening early in 2010 on Wakefield's historic waterfront.

National Coal Mining Museum for England

Meet the curator –a workshop about the work of curators, how they catalogue objects and how to start your own collection – is one of the many activities at this national Museum housed in a former colliery.
Underground tours and activities for the public and for schools give an special insight into the history of mining and a real feel of what it was like to work at the coalface. An exciting new cultural programme is also being developed, including performances underground.

Wakefield Youth Musical Theatre company - our gifted and talented youth company - supports young people who are interested in becoming professional performers. 'High School Musical' is one of their productions- when more than 300 young people auditioned for 60 parts. We want to extend this programme and do more to nurture excellence in our district. |

Wakefield College has visual and performing arts courses for people of all ages and abilities. These range from drawing and painting, graphic design, fashion and textiles, ceramics and photography, through to popular music, dance, drama and theatre studies. All courses are housed in specialist accommodation including well equipped studios and our 220 seater theatre.
