Applying for an allotment

Pruning a plantWakefield Council are responsible for the majority of allotment garden sites throughout the district.  However there are some areas where these sites are managed by Town or Parish Councils or by Wakefield District Housing.

Application Form

If you wish to apply for an allotment garden then you will need to fill in and return an application form (see 'Downloads'), specifying three sites you are interested in renting (see 'Related Links'). Please bear in mind that these applications cannot be acknowledged.

How long does it take?

Allotments are very popular and there are waiting lists for most sites. When you apply for an allotment, your name is added to the waiting list for that site. When a plot becomes available we contact the next person on the list, and so on. All applications will be dealt with in date order.

Due to the high demand for plot tenancies and the low number of tenancies being given up, you might have to wait for at least 12 months, or longer before being allocated a plot.

How much does it cost?

Allotment rents currently vary between £25 and £65 per annum, depending on the size of the plot. This figure is reviewed each year. There is an additional £10 water charge, for sites where water is provided.

There is a 50% concession for for Senior Citizens or who have a Retirement Pension or an Invalidity, or Widow’s Pension (with no other income).
