Who maintains the streetlights?

The maintenance of Streetlighting in the Wakefield District is carried out by Amey LG Ltd who work in partnership with Wakefield Council.

Amey maintain:

  • 41000 street lights
  • 2500 lit signs
  • 1200 illuminated bollards

What Amey do

Two Amey inspectors travel around the district, on pre-planned routes 5 nights a week, noting where there are faulty lights/signs/bollards. The whole of the Wakefield district is covered within a two week period.

Members of the public can greatly complement and assist Amey by reporting faults.  This reduces the time that the streetlight is unlit. Once we are aware of a fault we aim to repair it within 5 working days.

Sometimes a fault can be a result of the electricity supply failing. Amey LG only look after the column and the lantern.  We do not supply the electricity and we are not allowed to work on equipment that belongs to the electricity supplier. In these instances, we will inform the electicity supplier of the fault and they will endeavour to restore the supply within 15 working days.

Emergencies

Amey are on call 24 hours a day 365 days a year in case of emergencies (e.g. a column being knocked down. We will attend an emergency if there is a danger to life within 1 hour.

Lights that are on all day

If it is a single light, this would not be a priority because the unit is working.
If it is a full section of lights, it is probably an underground fault that the electricity company is trying to trace. They often need to leave the lights on during the day to aid the fault finding process. The council does not pay for the extra electricity used during this process.
