Members of the European Parliament - Yorkshire & The Humber

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were first elected by direct universal suffrage in 1979.  This ensures democratic control over the European Union.  MEPs now decide much of European Union law, such as on the Single Market, environment, transport, etc.

Elections for the European Union take place every five years.

The United Kingdom has 78 MEPs.  In the Yorkshire and Humber Region there are 6 MEPs - 2 Conservatives; 2 Labour; 1 Liberal Democrat and 1 United Kingdom Independence Party, elected by proportional representation in 2004 to cover the whole Region as follows:-
