Rolling Registration

The Register of Electors is a list of all those residents in the District who are eligible to vote in various elections.  If you are not on the Register of Electors, you cannot vote.

You must register to vote at elections. You are not automatically registered, even if you are paying council tax.

What happens if I move during the year?

Anyone moving into the district, or moving within the district or anyone who has not previously registered to vote, can register during the year through the "rolling register" procedure by simply completing and returning an electoral registration form.

Registering to vote

You will need a copy of the registration form to register during the year. You can get one by:

  • contacting the Electoral Services Office (see the 'Contact Electoral Services' link)
  • visiting the 'About my Vote' website (see 'Related Links').

Forms cannot be submitted online as you must provide a signature. You can return your form by post, fax or email (scanned image). You have to sign your own form. Someone else cannot do it for you.

Changes are made to the Register of Electors through the rolling registration procedure on the first working day of each month.  However, there is a deadline each month for the receipt of applications for inclusion in the update due to be effected the following month.  Changes cannot be made to the register for the period from September to November each year when the annual canvass is conducted prior to the publication of the revised register by 1 December each year.

When you send us your form we will add your name to our list of new applications. Any elector can then object to your name being added to the register. If this happens we will write to you.

If your application is not objected to we will change your details within 2 to 6 weeks of receiving your application form. We will write to tell you when your application is allowed.

We will also advise the electoral registration officer for your previous address so that your name can be removed from that address.

There are special rules about electors being added to the register during an election period. Because of these you may not be able to vote at the election if you are added during the election period.
