Laurie began his political career in 1964 when he was elected to Hemsworth Rural District Council and later South Kirkby Parish Council.
In 1985 Laurie became the Mayor of the City of Wakefield and responsible for the first Yorkshire Day Parade, now held annually in a different towns within Yorkshire. Laurie is President of the National Association of Councillors. He has also been Chair of numerous Committees and initiated many projects in this capacity.
Laurie, a family man with 4 children, has interests which include music (an amateur pianist), community work and travel.
