Burial and Cremation Orders

Burial Orders

After the death has been formally registered, an authorisation for burial is issued by the Registrar unless an inquest has been held.

Cremation Orders

If a body is to be cremated there has to be a separate certificate from the death certificate to allow this. The Coroner will issue free of charge the certificate needed to authorise cremation if a post mortem examination has been performed or an inquest has been held, otherwise the Registrar of Deaths will issue the certificate for cremation.

-------------------------------------

Death of a friend or relative is a distressing experience for anyone and we want to help in any way we can when you are suffering a bereavement. If you have any problems with the legal formalities following a death please let us know, as we may be able to help.

If the circumstances of the death make it necessary for an inquest to be held the Coroner's Officer will keep the relatives fully informed and give advice to keep any inconvenience to a minimum. Wherever possible, we will guide and explain the legal procedures which the Coroner is required to observe.
