What to expect on the day of the funeral at the crematorium

After leaving the family home or chapel of rest on the day of the funeral, families have the option of attending a church service prior to attending the crematorium or holding a service in the inter-denominational chapel in the crematorium itself.

Each cremation is booked at least 2 days in advance and a time of 30 minutes is allocated for each service in the crematorium chapel. In exceptional circumstances a double appointment may be possible if demand allows.

On arrival at the crematorium, the funeral cortege will be met by a representative of the council (Crematorium Service Officer) who is identifiable through the use of an identity badge that is clearly visible.

The cortege will be led into the chapel by the minister of religion or funeral director if no minister is required. Family and friends will be shown to their seats by the funeral director.

The type of service is dictated by the wishes of the family. Readings by family or friends are always accommodated. Music can be played on entering and leaving the crematorium and if required during the service itself. Service books are provided.

After the service the family will be led out of the chapel by the funeral director and shown to the floral tribute laying out area where time can be spent in quiet contemplation.

We have an extensive music library to choose from but if a special piece of music is not available we can always play tapes or CD’s if supplied. We would appreciate it if music supplied by the family is available to us at least the day before the service takes place in order to check volume levels and quality etc.

Approximately 2 weeks following the service a memorialisation pack will be sent to the person (applicant) who applied for the cremation giving information on all the types of memorials that are available at the crematorium.

Following cremation, the cremated remains of the deceased may be:

1. Strewn in the crematorium gardens of rest in a location chosen by the family, with the family present if preferred.

2. Interred in or strewn over a cemetery grave space.

3. Interred in a cemetery memorial garden grave space.

4. Removed by the funeral director, family member or representative.

5. Posted by us to an address supplied by the applicant for the cremation (a charge does apply for postage).

6. Retained at the crematorium until a decision is made by the family on how they are to be disposed of (A charge may be made for storage of remains after a month has elapsed)

If cremated remains are disposed of outside the Wakefield area a ‘Certificate of Cremation’ may be required by the authority carrying out the disposal. The certificate of cremation is available from the Bereavement Services Office (a charge is applicable).
