Information
Situated on a site directly adjacent to the magnificent Church of St. Peter, the cemetery and adjoining churchyard offer the traditional location of a tranquil and meaningful resting place for the deceased. The demarcation of the churchyard and the cemetery proper is a low stone wall which runs the length of the site. Passing through the original entrance gate off Lake Lock Road, the cemetery stretches away into the distance before taking on a westerly direction parallel to the churchyard.
A number of interesting headstones are sited in the old part of the cemetery, whilst the newer portions have been given over to the small lawn type monuments. Here in recent years an attempt was made to standardise the nature of memorials in a similar fashion to that attempted at Alverthorpe and Outwood cemeteries. Whilst the overall view of the presence of the regimented headstones is strikingly impressive, in reality the cost of providing them became prohibitive for bereaved families.
As previously stated, St. Peter’s Church dominates the whole area and its presence gives the cemetery a traditional and characteristic appearance. The cemetery now provides a facility for the interment of cremated remains in a small memorial garden.
