Snydale Cemetery

Red Lane,
Streethouse

Location/Direction

Situated on Red Lane between Streethouse and Snydale, the cemetery has found itself isolated in recent years because of the closure of Red Lane, at a point just beyond the cemetery entrance, in order to facilitate the extraction of coal from a huge opencast site.   Visitors to the burial ground must negotiate a railway crossing in order to gain access to the lane leading to the cemetery. If vehicular access is required, then arrangements must be made with the Crossing Keeper so that safe crossing can be achieved.

Information

Recent opencast mining development in the vicinity has left the cemetery extremely isolated. However, in years gone by, when Red Lane connected the two neighbouring villages, of Streethouse and Snydale, passing traffic would have created the necessary link between the establishment and the community. This particular location for a cemetery seems unique bearing in mind its unusual accessibility.

The passage of time and modern day vandalism have been cruel adversaries to this cemetery necessitating the demolition in 1979 of the original lodge together with the neighbouring twin chapels. The original gate and gate pillars have also gone to be replaced with modern, less ornate facilities.

A large wall of red brick encompasses the site and large weather-beaten trees stand in rigid formation along the boundaries. The lane from the level crossing, leading to the cemetery is pleasantly tree lined, giving an extremely attractive approach in summer. The cemetery now provides a facility for the interment of cremated remains in a small memorial garden.
